My new Photoshop CS5 book (okay I actually
have 2) is about to go to press. It's 100%
written and laid out. This is a great book if
you’re self-taught in Photoshop or for
classroom use. Instead of getting bogged down in
every feature, I strip the application to the
core skills you'll need to work professionally.
The book is ready to order and will
ship soon. As a bonus, it also includes 6.5
hours of training videos.
Photoshop is the foundation of every digital
career. Many users think they know it, but in
truth they have gaping holes in their training.
This book covers what a professional truly needs
to know about Photoshop. For students this book
offers a chance to explore the program
interactively. For professionals it provides a
chance to add to your skill base. The book cuts
though the clutter and is unique, focusing not
just on digital photography, but also the Web,
graphic design, multimedia, and video.
Readers will learn the basics in correcting,
editing, sharpening, retouching, and presenting
photos as well as work on specific
projects/exercises. Coverage of exciting new C5
features includes: Puppet Warp, Refining Edges,
Eyedropper tools, Merge to HDR, Content Aware
Fill/Scale/Heal, 3D Text, and Lens Profile.
The full-color book includes a DVD with hand-on
exercises and practice images as well as 72 new
video training tutorials that expand the on the
lessons in the book.

I found a great
series on YouTube... an old show called Horizon
from the BBC. This episode is entitled "How to
Film the Impossible" and features an in-depth
look at Industrial Light and Magic.
When digital
cameras became commercially available, the memory
cards used to store pictures were very expensive.
Photographers could not afford multiple or
high-capacity cards, so they wanted more images
to fit on a single, smaller card. Smaller file
sizes would also enable consumers who lacked an
understanding of digital imaging to attach photos
to email with minimum technical headaches.
With these two scenarios in place, manufacturers
turned to an Internet-friendly format, JPEG. It
was a proven technology, and one that was
familiar to many users. A JPEG file looks for
areas where pixel detail is repeated, such as the
color white on every key of your computer
keyboard. The file then discards repeated
information and tells the computer to repeat
certain color values or data to re-create the
image. The drawback is that a JPEG file is lossy,
so every time you modify it and re-save,
additional compression is applied to the image.
Newer digital cameras, generally the pro models,
offer newer formats, usually called raw. These
raw (or native) formats have several benefits
over shooting to JPEG. The images are usually
captured at a higher bit depth, which means that
the pixels contain more information about the
color values in the image. Most raw files have a
depth of 10, 12, or even 16-bits per channel
instead of the 8 used by JPEG. This raw format
also has a greater tonal range, resulting in
better exposure for shadows and highlights.
The image on the left is how the camera captured
a JPEG. Making adjustments to the image is
possible, but will lead to more degradation in
image quality. The image on the right is a
properly developed raw file. Working with raw
files gives you access to greater control over an
image.
The raw file captures the
unprocessed data from the camera’s image
sensor. While your camera may contain settings
for sharpness, exposure, or lighting conditions,
the raw file stores that info as modifiable
information and captures the original
(unmodified) data that came through your
camera’s sensors. Each manufacturer treats
the format differently, using a proprietary
format. Fortunately, Photoshop and Aperture
frequently update their raw technology to support
the newest cameras on the market.
Because the raw data is unprocessed, you must
essentially “develop” the image data
within Photoshop or Aperture. You can choose to
adjust several options related to the image, as
well as the lens and lighting conditions. You can
“tweak” the image after shooting it
(as opposed to JPEG, which is limited to the
settings you had when shooting).

You all know the
feeling—that annoying “nag” in
your wrists, that stinging or
“tingling” feeling down your
forearms, perhaps that aching pain in your
shoulders and neck. At first it was a minor
annoyance… and now, sometimes you find
yourself “rushing” your edits, or
perhaps even not editing at all, because of the
pain.
You’re not alone. As more and more people
become “knowledge workers”, doctors
and therapists are seeing more and more cases of

How serious is the problem? Very. According to

compressing video for the web and multimedia. Be
sure to read part one if you haven’t done
so.
1.) De-interlace your
video: Most video files are interlaced,
which means that half of one image is
blended with half of the next. On a
Television this produces smoother motion, on
a computer it produces junk.
2.) Lower your audio standards: Most users are
listening to computer audio on tiny speakers.
Cutting your sample rate to 22 or 11 kHz and the
sample size to 8-bit will often produce
unnoticeable audio changes but huge space saving.
3.) Shrink the window: While you don’t need
to make video postage stamps sized. But reducing
the window to half size creates a file that is
25% the file size of the original. That’s a
BIG savings in space.

Well... color me
surprised.... my new book on Aperture Hit #1 on
Amazon across several categories.
I’m not sure about the Digital Music
category... but it also took top spot as the best
selling Mac book as well.
You can check the book out here... if you’ve
gotten the book and enjoyed it, can you
please post a review as well.
When I look at what Apple
has accomplished its been an interesting
journey. The company has released a ton of
great products (and also a few clunkers). I
have found agreat imagethat lets you
see much of the product line laid out
chronologically. After all, you can't get to
the great Mighty Mouse without first passing
the "hockey puck."
It really is pretty interesting tosee the "big"
picture. Be sure to click on the
graphic so you can zoom in and view.
Forgive the short blog
posts... I'm a little busy for the next two
weeks finishing this:
“Fully updated for
Aperture 2, this comprehensive book-DVD training
combo starts with the basics of image management
and takes you step by step all the way through
Aperture's powerful photo-editing,
image-retouching, proofing, publishing, and
archiving features. Aperture 2's new features are
completely covered, including a new RAW-image
processing engine, a streamlined interface,
powerful new adjustment tools, and added
integration with Mac OS X and other Apple
products for instant web publishing and one-click
portfolio syncing. Apple Pro Training Series:
Aperture 2 delivers comprehensive training - the
equivalent of a two-day course - in one
project-based book. You'll learn time-saving
techniques for sorting, ranking, and organizing
images, effective methods for correcting and
enhancing images, plus efficient ways to display
images for client review, apply metadata, update
your online portfolio automatically, and much
more. Real-world exercises feature professional
photography from a variety of genres, including
photo-journalism, sports, wedding, commercial,
and portraiture. All the files you need to
complete the exercises are included on the
DVD.”
And by fully-updated... its a completely new book
with all-new photos and a ton of cool new things.
Richard Harrington was
recently a guest on the Plugged-In Podcast

I just picked up a new
book that I highly recommend on maximizing
your efficiency and workflow with Final Cut
Pro. Be sure to check outFinal Cut Pro Workflows: The
Independent Studio Handbookby Jason Osder
and Robbie Carman. The book has a lot of
coverage on integrating graphics with Final
Cut Pro and is truly useful.
“Today's digital production tools empower
the small team to produce multimedia projects
that formerly required large teams. Orchestrating
a production requires more than proficiency with
the postproduction tools. Final Cut Pro
Workflows: The Independent Studio Handbook offers
a cookbook of postproduction workflows that teams
can follow to deliver an array of products to
their clients. It describes appropriate
postproduction workflows, team roles and
responsibilities, and required equipment for some
of the most common media productions.”
With an easy style and great depth,Final Cut Pro Workflows: The
Independent Studio Handbookis an enjoyable
and important read. Osder and Carman offer a
diverse background and extensive experience
with Final Cut Pro.
I've launched a new
resource site called Final Cut Help to offer you
more news on Final Cut Studio as well as
centralize all of my Final Cut resources and
training products. Here are a few things you may
like.
Congrats to Scott
Kelby and Kelby Training for launching a new
online training site. The subscription site is a
great value and offers a lot of great training on
software. Coverage is mostly Adobe tools... but I
have a few titles in the works with them that
will also cover Apple software.
Q.Before
we get started; do I have to read all this
stuff, or do you have a quick video clip
that explains it all?
A.Yup,
we sure do.Here’s the
link.
Q.So
what is subscription-based online training?
A.In the
past, we’ve offered online training
courses, and it was always “Pay as you
go” (basically, you’d pay
individually for each class you took). But now
you can pay one annual subscription fee and then
you have unlimited access to all our online
classes.
Q.You
said this is amazingly affordable. OK, how
affordable is it?
A.Our
annual subscription is only $199, or you can pay
$19.95 a month. By contrast our online classes
used to be around $70.00 each. If you took just
three classes, you were already paying more than
our new subscription tuition. Now, you get
unlimited access, all year long, for only $199.
That’s just 55˘ a day, for unlimited access
to the best Photoshop and photography teachers on
the planet.
Q.What
makes you guys different? A.We
knew we had to do something really special to
stand out from the other online training options,
so we asked ourselves what is the single most
important aspect of any online course. Is it the
topics? The price? The technology? The quantity?
The look? What is it? We think the single most
important thing is “The teacher.”
It’s who you’re learning from, and
their connection with the students. It’s
their passion, their knowledge, their ability to
communicate and share in a way that makes sense,
that’s engaging, and even fun. That’s
why we built our entire program around one thing;
bringing you nothing but the very best teachers
on the planet. Period.
Q.If
the teacher provides files for us to practice
along with, can we download them, or do we have
to pay extra?
A.You
get ‘em without any extra fees whatsoever.
It’s part of your subscription.
Q.Can
I get a sneak peek at how it all works? How about
letting me try a couple of lessons?
A.Sure,
why not. Head over to theKelbyTraining site, and
click the “Try it Now (Free)” link
at the top. You can watch the first three
lessons from any of the classes to get a sense
of what we’re doing, how the player
works, and stuff like that.
I just gave
a useful class (at least people there
thought it was) on Automating Photoshop. We
touched on Actions, Scripts, Droplets, and
Automation commands. I have a few notes
pulled together on the topic and wanted to
share them here.

the field. In this session you will learn how to
properly capture your video content outside of a
controlled environment and unpredictable lighting
and background noise. You also learn how to
achieve the best results when encoding files for
various output devices. See how the experts
retain overall quality with an overview of the
latest methods and technologies. This session
will also share best practices for multi-camera
productions.

development (more later).
But I did write a new book and thoroughly revise
another.

The NAB
Podcasting Summit was a success! We had a
ton of great folks come out to fins out more
about podcasting. One of the shows, Viral
interviewed me about the conference (I was
the Program Manager for the conference as
well as a speaker). Their show is all about
the folks making Internet TV... think of it
as an insider's perspective on the whole
'podcasting thing.'
Check out what you missed (plus watch some of the
other episodes too). Take a look at Episode 19
for more on NAB.
Do you need to get your
After Effects project onto a DVD for others
to view? Bob Donlon (a video evangelist at
Adobe) offers agreat tutorialon his blog. Bob
shows you in detailed steps how to take an AE
composition and create an auto-play DVD (one
without menus that just works). This is a
great timesaver and I strongly encourage you
tocheck it out(as well as the
other great stuff onhis
blog).
Thanks for being patient (its been a whirlwind of
CES, Macworld, and family time).
I finally have the majority of my CES Handouts
online. You can access them here or in theConference
Handoutssection.
Looking for some free
training? The folks from DV Expo have put up
one of my classes onDesigning HD
Graphics. The class is streaming
video and it also has the slides synchronized
and shots of the HD Graphics I design for the
crowd. The class was taught at DV Expo West
back in November, but you can take it for
free. You'll need to register, but that only
take 45 seconds and again... it's free. Be
sure to set some time aside (this is a 2.5
hour class). Fortunately there are chapter
points and you can digest it in pieces. Plus
there are many other great classes there
including legal issues facing creatives, Flash
video, and video camera tips.
Enjoy!
Well after a few weeks
off, I have re-enterred the role of online
forum host. I have partnered with the great
folks over at DV Magazine and DV.com to
bring you a new interactive forum. This is a
great place to share ideas, ask questions,
and meet up with others who share a passion
for all things pixels. The forum is totally
free, you can access it by clicking the
forum button in the menu bar above or
through thisdirect
link.
I hope you enjoy this new service and feel free
todrop me a linewith comments or
suggestions.
The great folks over
atPhotoshop User
Magazinehave launched anonline learning
centerfor the new Photoshop CS3
beta. You'll find great articles, interviews,
and video tutorials on the latest technology
development. I particularly liked Scott
Kelby's Top 10 list and interview with John
Nack, the Photoshop product manager.
These guys have good stuff and can be commended
for making the bulk of it free to new users. Be
sure tocheck it outand explore new
options. You may also want to Join NAPP for
access to a wealth of other online materials
and training.
Long-rumored,
but finally true. Adobe has announced a
public beta program for Photoshop CS3. While
the finished program is not yet ready for
release until the Spring, it is almost ready
for 'prime-time.' You can read more about
the release onAdobe's websitefor the full
details.
If you are looking for some training, here's two
places to start:

Web
To those who attended,
sorry for the short delay in getting my
final notes up. Friday turned into a day of
recovery, but you'll now find all of
thenotes
posted. While you are in the
handout section, feel free to poke around and
look at other resources. You'll find lots of
ideas that will help you out with projects.
If you wanted to take advantage of our DVD
discount (10% off atVASST.com) be sure to enter the code

For most of you, it's
holiday time... a time for giving of gifts
and catching up with friends. Well I'm
brining that same joy into the blogosphere.
Exactly what am I giving away? It's a secret
and I can't reveal it to December 15th...
but check back then.
I promise some really cool free downloads that
you'll want to get. A certain legal document
prevents me from leaking any details, but you
will NOT want to miss what I have in store. Trust
me...GRIN.
If you are in need of some
new ideas or inspiration, be sure to check
out the new articles from Adobe experts.
There's a full list posted over atPhotoshopNews.comand there's some
truly great stuff in there. While the articles
skew towards digital photographers (like most
of Adobe these days), I found these two very
useful.
In case you didn't know,
the SonyPlaystation Portable (aka
PSP)is podcast compatible. Just
not right out of the box. Sony sells a
software/cable bundle called theSony PSP Media
Managerwhich lets you manage your
media library (even iTunes) and move things
onto the Playstation Portable. On the Mac
side, there's a great piece of shareware
calledPSPWarewhich lets you
mange media on your Mac and move things over.
All in all, pretty dang cool (plus it gave me
a "legitmate" reason to finally pick one up).
If you attended our
classes at DV Expo in LA, you'll want to
check out the PhotoshopforVideo.comConference Handouts
section. We had four great classes
including the hot topic of podcasting. We
shared our experiences of creating video
podcasts with the crowd and tried to educate
and inspire the audience to try it for
themselves. Check out the handouts for
yourself.
I’m still reading
this comic, but it is absolutely
amazing.Bound by Lawis absolutely
amazing, it analyzes the murky world of
copyright law in a clear way. It is an
excellent source on information for film and
video pros as well as other creative
professions. Published by theDuke University Center for the
Study of the Public
Domain, this comic covers the
essential information in the most creative and
entertaining way possible. It’s totally
free and should not be missed.
I've just posted an old
article of mine that I really like.
It’s called “The Director’s
Cut– Digital Video and
the Power of the Macintosh.” It’s
a fun article that shares a bunch of ideas on
pre-production, production, and post. It was
originally published in MacDesign Magazine
(now calledLayers). The article is totally
free and showcases a lot of products and
techniques that we use to save time and money
over atRHED
Pixel. I hope you enjoy.
Looking for a great screen
capture tool? I’ve got a new favorite
for grabbing video on a Mac. Be sure to
check outiShowUfrom
shinywhitebox. This tool is much more stable
then others I've tried and it is a true
universal application that runs great on both
Intel and PowerPC Macs. What’s truly
unique is that the video files are captured
and encoded in real time. This means as soon
as the capture is stopped, the file is ready
to use. You can create screen captures for web
tutorials, DVDs, or even HD. What will all
this power set you back? A whopping $20. Be
sure tocheck it
out.
In need of
someone training this Fall? We've released
five new titles. Three are brand new for
Final Cut Pro users:Color
Correction,Advanced
Trimming, andMedia
Management. These are three
areas that even the most experienced user can
gain speed and confidence.
We've also significantly updated two of our best
sellers: AnInside Look at the
HVX-200and a guide to
working withHD Media. There are these
and several more available atVASST.com. We hope you enjoy
them!
Well, if you're looking
for a new resource to learn Apple’s
Final Cut Studio, then check out theFinal Cut Help
podcastover at iTunes. Each week
we'll have a new tutorial on all aspect of
Final Cut Studio including Final Cut Pro, DVD
Studio Pro, Motion, and Compressor. The
high-quality video training features Apple
Certified instructors including Abba Shapiro,
Gary Adcock, Chris Phrommayon, Mason Dixon,
and Richard Harrington.
The podcast is a great way to sample our
newDVD
trainingtitles which are available
from VASST.
I've postedconference notesfrom my sessions
at NAB New York. If you attended any of my
classes, be sure to have a look. Even if you
didn't attend, you might find the resources
useful. The two most popular classes
wereColor
Correction for Final Cut ProandMotion
Control 3D. If you couldn't attend (or
want to go deeper) both of these haveDVDs available from
VASST.com.
This one came up
today when a client asked me about previewing
Photoshop graphics on a TV monitor. There's a
great product calledEchoFire, which lets you preview out
of Photoshop using virtually any video
hardware. But if DV is good enough for you,
then Photoshop CS2 has you covered.
1. Hook up a FireWire
device that uses the DV protocol like a deck
or Analog/Digital converter (I like ones
fromCanopus).
2.
Make sure the hardwire is powered up and
connected to a monitor, then launch Photoshop.
3. Work with your current document and design as
needed.
4. Choose File > Export Video Preview...
5. Specify your Output Mode and Aspect Ratio and
click OK.
So... I've never
been able to say this... forgive the
indulgence... “We're number one...
we're number one!” Okay... I’m
over it. This week our newPodcasthit #1 on the
iTunes Store for Software Training (and we
broke the Top 5 for all technology). I am
quite happy that thousands of folks are
accessing ourPhotoshop trainingand I
hope you all find it helpful. In case you
haven’t subscribed yet (it’s free)
be sure to check it out on the iTunes
store(if you
don't want to use iTunes,click
here.)
If
you're a Photoshop fan, then we've got you
covered. We've got two Photoshop podcasts you
should check out.
Understanding Adobe
Photoshop
–This is a
weekly podcast targeting new and intermediate
users of Photoshop in all industries. It's
sponsored by Peachpit TV.
Photoshop for
Video
–This one also
comes at you every week and focusses on those
issues facing video and motion graphic
designers. Other kinds of users may enjoy its
emphasis on speed and flexibility as well.
By the way... we're not the only one's who like
them. Apple has featured both on the front page
of the Technology section in their New &
Notable spotlight.
As
Photoshop World winds down, its time for
homework. Be sure to check out theconference handout
sectionfor extra
notes and practice files. If you took a class
with me, I hope you enjoyed. Have fun and keep
learning.
Looking
for a new design tool? Well this probably is not
it... but it is fun. TheOfficial Seal
Generator
can create 'official-looking' seals in a flash.
Enter your text then choose a border and an
emblem. You can even customize colors. A simple
click of the 'Go' button and an 'Official Seal'
will be generated for you. If the presets don't
do it for you, the author encourages you to make
contact.
There's a ton of funny things like this made by
the same group, be sure to check outtheir
site.
What
piece of Mac shareware has me most
excited... a cursor enhancer calledOmniDazzle.
Yup... giggle if you want. But theOmni Grouphas
released a killer program that has
dramatically changed my teaching style. This
useful application add several visual effects
for the screen and mouse pointer.
Now some of them are downright cheesy, but
educators should really check out the following
effects:
•
Flashlight–
Which points a spotlight on the area of focus and
dims the screen
•
Focal Point –Which
darkens all but the active UI element
•
Scribble – This
gives you four colored markers to draw on the
screen like a NFL commentator
• Zoom –My
favorite, which lets you marquee a selection,
which is then magnified full-screen
So yes... its version 1.0 and Mac-only (and
requires OS 10.4.6 and Core Video)... its still
worth checking out. It's $14.95 and you can
download a demo from theOmni Group
website.
If
you happen to be traveling through the
Pacific Northwest any time soon, I recommend
a stop at thePacific Science
Center.
They have an in-depth exhibit onvideo
games. It
focusses on the technology, as well as the art
and cultural issues. Seeing that the video
game industry is as big as the feature film
marketplace, its important to keep an eye on.
This exhibit explores the field through all
aspects and offers a chance to get hands-on
with a wide range of games.
I've
been meaning to visit theExperience Music
Projectmuseum
for some time. Started as a shrine toJimi Hendrixby
Microsoft cofounderPaul
Allen,
the museum offers much more. I particularly
enjoyed exhibits on the early years ofRap music,
as well as an in-depth exploration of
thehistory of
guitars.
Designers will throughly enjoy two temporary
exhibits, on oneconcert postersallows
for great exploration of typography and
print-making, whileDouble-Takecounters
classic artists like Van Gough to moderns such
as Lichtenstein. The museum also offers some
innovative computer technology that allows
all-ages to get hands on with instruments as
well as receive some digital tutoring in
musicianship.
The building itself is even a piece of art and is
aFrank Gehey
master-piecethat
encourages you to explore. Even if you're not
a passionate audiophile, the technology and
design aspects of this museum make it a
must-stop for those passing through Seattle.
We've
added a brandnew pageto
our Resources section. Come search for
“free” images at various
government agency sites. Several websites
offer images that are either public domain or
have very generous usage rights. Be sure to
read usage terms at each site.
We call them “free” as they were paid
for with U.S. tax dollars (which means they are
now free to use). Start toexplore nowand
find images for your next project (many of
these are high-resolution as well!) Please
share this page with your friends or students.
How good
are your eyes? Sure in the good old days you
could spot the fake dinosaurs and Spiderman
was a stunt man in a suit for every shot,
These days we are inundated with
photorealistic CGI on TV and in cinema. Just
how good are your senses? Head over to
Autodesk (makers of 3D Studio Max and Maya)
to take thisquiz. I got 8 out
of 10 on my first try... take alookand stretch
your brain for two minutes. Thanks toScott Simmonsfor the
story.
Well... color me
surprised.... my new book on Aperture Hit #1 on
Amazon across several categories.
I’m not sure about the Digital Music
category... but it also took top spot as the best
selling Mac book as well.
You can check the book out here... if
you’ve gotten the book and enjoyed it, can
you please post a review as well.
