Final Cut Pro's 3-Way Color Corrector needs accurate black, white, and middle gray points to work well.

Most nonlinear editing systems offer a three-way color corrector filter, which perfectly calibrates off these three reference tones. During editing you can adjust color based on the black, gray, and white point in the calibration target.

A QP Card is easy to affix.

One method we use is a QP Card (www.qpcard.se) which are priced at around $5 per card. These disposable cards can be attached right to your clapboard. Chances are you'll need a clapboard on set to synchronize audio recording or multiple camera angles (more in Chapter 13). Because the cards fade over time, you should remember to put a fresh color balance card on your clapboard for each shoot. They are small and lightweight, easily fitting in your gear bag. A small investment in money and effort for accurate color.

The PhotoVision target doubles as a reflector

Another option we keep on hand is the PhotoVision calibration target (www.photovisionvideo.com)

. This target comes in several sizes, ones small enough to literally fold and fit in your pocket to others that top out at 34-inches across. These function the same as a QP card, with three strips of black, middle grey, and white. The benefit though is that they can be flipped and used as a standard reflector to bounce light on set.
